New law passed on gender equality targets for workplaces

Diversity Council Australia (DCA) welcomes the introduction of new gender equality laws that will accelerate progress towards fairer and more inclusive workplaces across the country.

Large employers, with 500 or more employees, will now be required to select three gender equality targets from a menu of numeric and action-oriented targets. This move sets a clear expectation that gender equality is not just an aspiration but a business priority.  Employers will have three years to demonstrate progress on the targets.

Australia is the first country in the world to require companies to select targets and make progress on gender equality.

DCA has long advocates for stronger action on workplace gender equality. Like many stakeholders, including the Women’s Economic Equality Taskforce who made observations in their final report, we believe that progress on achieving gender equality in Australia has been too slow. These reforms mark a significant step forward in bringing about real change.

Catherine Hunter, CEO of Diversity Council Australia, said:

“Evidence shows that setting clear goals and targets is one of the most effective ways to increase the representation of women and other underrepresented groups at leadership levels, which is one of a number of levers businesses can choose to improve gender equality.

“This world-first legislation signals that Australia is serious about gender equality, setting a new global benchmark and reinforcing our commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal 5, to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

“By ensuring organisations take tangible action, these reforms will help accelerate progress and create fairer, more inclusive workplaces across the country.”

What does this mean for DCA members?

For employers with over 500 employees, targets must be selected in reporting in April/May 2026.

WGEA will provide comprehensive resources and support to help you determine how to choose the best targets for your organisation and work towards achieving your goal.

The menu will be set via a legislative instrument in coming weeks, and will be circulated after that.
